If you love chocolate, coffee, and frosty beverages, you’re going to flip for my copycat Starbucks Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino recipe! This creamy, dreamy, mocha-flavored coffee frappé is bursting at the seams with cookies n’ cream vibes. YUM!
As a kid, I was obsessed with milkshakes. I mean, the only thing better than ice cream is ice cream you can slurp up with a straw! As an adult, I still love one as a treat from time to time, but Starbucks-style frappuccinos are more my speed.
Not only are they caffeinated (as a working mama with two littles, you KNOW I need it 😂), they’re also much lighter since they don’t contain ice cream! So far, I’ve created copycat recipes for making a pumpkin spice frappuccino (basic girls, rejoice!) and a cinnamon oat milk cookie crumble frappuccino for my dairy-free readers.
Clearly, I had to make this mocha cookie crumble frap for all the chocolate lovers out there! It has the flavors of an iced mocha plus the delightful crunch of Oreo cookies and chocolate-covered espresso beans, all blended together into a blizzard of yumminess and topped with plenty of whipped cream. 😋

What is a mocha cookie crumble frappuccino?
Frappuccinos are the Starbucks version of what other cafés would call coffee frappés. At their most basic, they’re composed of ice, milk, sweetener & coffee (or in Starbucks’ case, “frappuccino chips”) all blended together into a creamy quasi-milkshake.
For this recipe, the sweetener of choice is my homemade chocolate syrup. We also add chocolate-covered espresso beans to double down on the mocha flavor and Oreos to add sweetness and crunch. Whaaaaat?!? So good.
What does it taste like?
The chocolate cookie crumble frappuccino is a dream for any coffee and chocolate lover. Imagine a frozen mocha latte with the bold notes of cold-brewed java, deep dark chocolate, and creamy milk. The addition of blended chocolate-covered espresso beans enhances that flavor profile with pleasant bittersweet notes while simultaneously amping up the caffeine.
But what really seals the deal is the addition of Oreos—the dark chocolate cookie crumbles add crunchy texture while the cream filling adds vanilla sweetness. And, to top it all off, we add a lofty cloud of whipped cream—a beautiful contrast to the roasty-toasty coffee and rich chocolate flavors.
In short, it’s like a thinner version of a chocolate coffee cookies n’ cream milkshake with an extra coffee punch!
Why You’ll Love This Chocolate Oreo Cookie Frappuccino Recipe
- Quick & Easy - All you need is about 5 minutes to blend one up!
- Basic Ingredients - If you order a mocha cookie crumble frappuccino at Starbucks, you might be getting more than you bargained for—the ingredients list is easily a paragraph long! The most outlandish thing you’ll need for this DIY version is xanthan gum, which is a natural corn derivative that is used as an emulsifier. Don’t worry, a bag will last a long time!
- Budget-Friendly - Everyone knows it’s nearly impossible to leave a Starbucks without spending at least $5, before tax and tip. Homemade frappuccinos admittedly require a bit of up-front investment—you’ll likely need to buy Oreos, chocolate coffee beans, and xanthan gum—but when you break it down per drink, homemade costs just a fraction of what Starbucks charges!
Ingredients Needed
As promised, you only need a few simple ingredients to make this chocolate cookie crumble frappuccino. Here’s what to grab:
- Oreo Cookies - America’s favorite chocolate sandwich cookie is responsible for the yummy cookie crumbles.
- Ice - You can’t have a frozen frappé without a frozen element! If possible, start with filtered water.
- Cold Brew Coffee - The cold-brew method produces a richly flavored, super smooth, low-acidity coffee with higher caffeine content than either espresso or conventional coffee.
- 2% Milk - If you look at the Starbucks website, their default milk option is whole milk for frappuccinos (unless otherwise specified in the name). I opted to use 2% since that’s what we drink at home. It’s still super creamy!
- Mocha Sauce - This is the primary source of chocolate flavor. Feel free to use store-bought, but making your own is cheaper, more natural, and generally tastes better!
- Chocolate-Covered Espresso Beans - More chocolate and more coffee? Sign me up.
- Xanthan Gum - Using this emulsifier helps hold the ice, coffee, and milk together to maintain the frozen consistency for as long as possible. Since it’s widely used in gluten-free baking, most grocery stores now carry it.
- Whipped Cream - Because what’s cookies and cream without plenty of cream?
Substitutions
When you order a frappuccino from Starbucks, your customization options are limited. When you act as your own barista, the world is your oyster! Here are a few swaps to try:
- Oreo Cookies - You can use the generic store brand of chocolate sandwich cookies, though I’ve never found one I like quite as much as an Oreo! Any other crunchy chocolate cookie will also work.
- Ice - For added oomph, swap in coffee ice cubes.
- Cold Brew Coffee - Strongly brewed conventional coffee or espresso that has been chilled will do the trick!
- 2% Milk - Any dairy or plant-based milk can be used here, though I recommend sticking to slightly higher-fat options for the best mouthfeel.
- Mocha Sauce - You can use regular ol’ Hershey’s Syrup in a pinch!
- Chocolate-Covered Espresso Beans - Don’t have any? To get a similar effect, add 10 regular coffee beans and about 1.5 tablespoons of mini chocolate chips.
- Xanthan Gum - Guar gum and glucomannan are both easy 1:1 substitutes for xanthan gum.
- Whipped Cream - Feel free to swap in coconut whipped cream for a dairy-free option. You could also get creative with flavored cold foam!
How To Make A Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino At Home
Making a DIY frappuccino like Starbucks is easier than you’d think. Here’s how it’s done:
Step 1: Crush the Oreos into crumbs and set aside.
Step 2: Add the ice, cold brew, milk, 2 tablespoons of mocha sauce, espresso beans, xanthan gum, and all but 1 teaspoon of the Oreo crumbles to a high-speed blender.
Step 3: Blend until smooth.
Step 4: Pour the frappuccino into a tall glass.
Step 5: Garnish with whipped cream, the remaining mocha sauce, and the remaining crushed Oreos.
Step 6: Drink Up!
Optional Variations & Dietary Adjustments
- Caffeine-Free - If you love the flavor of coffee but don’t want as much caffeine, swap in decaf cold brew and decaf chocolate-covered espresso beans. Alternatively, you can swap in your favorite coffee alternative (e.g. Dandy Blend or roasted chicory) for the coffee, then a tablespoon of cacao nibs and mini chocolate chips for the espresso beans. All that said, chocolate has a bit of naturally occurring caffeine. To be truly caffeine-free try making a white chocolate cookie crème frappuccino swapping in milk for the coffee and using white mocha syrup, golden Oreos, and mini white chocolate chips.
- Dairy-Free/Vegan - Follow the oat milk frappuccino template, but swap your syrups and crumbles. Oreos are naturally vegan, but you may want to read the label for your chocolate-covered coffee beans to make sure.
- Reduced-Sugar or Sugar-Free - Try using sugar-free mocha syrup to reduce the sugar content considerably. You can also swap in sugar-free sandwich cookies and sugar-free chocolate espresso beans (or use vegan mini chocolate chips and whole coffee beans or cacao nibs) to make it fully free of added sugars. Note that dairy milk has naturally occurring sugars and plant milks can vary widely in added sugar content, so read your labels!
- Gluten-Free - Swap in GF Oreos to keep it celiac-friendly!
- Skinny Frappuccino - Follow the instructions to make a reduced-sugar or sugar-free frap as described above, then take it a step further by using lighter milk options (e.g. skim or almond milk) and omitting the whipped cream.
- Other Flavors - Not a fan of chocolate? Try making a white mocha cookie crumble frap by swapping in white mocha sauce and golden Oreos. Feeling adventurous? Turn your favorite iced peppermint mocha, iced white peppermint mocha, toasted white chocolate mocha, merry mint white mocha, or Mexican mocha into a cookie crumble frappuccino. Not only can you swap out or add different flavors of coffee syrups, you can also play with the many varieties of Oreos out there!

Recipe Success Tips
- Last-Minute Magic - Wanna get a headstart? Add everything to the blender except the ice and Oreo crumbles until you’re ready to blend and enjoy—this frosty mocha cookie crumble frappe has a fleeting window where it’s the right frozen consistency and the cookies retain their crunch. Store the mix in the fridge until you’re ready to party.
- Don’t Fear Fat - If possible, use milk that has some fat in it. This helps to achieve a nice creamy texture, making it even more slurp-worthy.
- From-Scratch Frap - Making your own mocha syrup and cold brew won’t just save you money; it’ll also help you avoid a laundry list of artificial additives you’d find in store-bought versions.
FAQs
Yep! “Mocha” indicates a drink with both coffee/espresso and chocolate.
According to their website, this chocolatey cookie frappuccino is made with: ice, milk, coffee frappuccino syrup [sugar, water, natural flavor, salt, xanthan gum, potassium sorbate, citric acid], whipped cream [cream (cream, mono and diglycerides, carrageenan), vanilla syrup (sugar, water, natural flavors, potassium sorbate, citric acid)], coffee, mocha sauce [water, sugar, cocoa processed with alkali, natural flavor], frappuccino chips [confectionery coating (sugar, palm kernel and palm oils, cocoa processed with alkali, soy lecithin, vanilla, milk), cocoa (processed with alkali, 9%), cookie crumbs (unbleached unenriched wheat flour, sugar, palm and palm kernel oil, cocoa processed with alkali, chocolate mass, salt, sodium bicarbonate, soy lecithin, natural flavor), chocolate mass (2%), and salt], chocolate cookie grind topping [sugar, enriched flour (wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), palm and palm kernel oil, cocoa processed with alkali, salt, sodium bicarbonate, soy lecithin, natural flavor].
Quite a mouthful, eh? I don’t know about you, but I’d rather stick to the DIY version.
It’s right there in the name—the mocha cookie crumble uses cookie crumbles for texture, whereas java chip uses chocolate chips. I believe the mocha version also has a coffee-chocolate frappuccino base whereas the java chip has a plain coffee frappuccino base.
Nope! At the time of publication, this frosty marvel is available year-round.
If you order from Starbucks, it is neither. If you make it at home, you can make it either (or both!). Jump up to the variations section for more guidance.
At Starbucks, it’ll definitely cost you more than $5, but prices vary by size and location. If you make it at home, it’ll cost a fraction of that!

While this DIY frappuccino is super tasty, it’s also pretty indulgent at 418 calories per serving. Carbs sit at 66 grams, nothing to sniff at. Of those, 44 are thanks to sugar, mainly from the mocha syrup, cookies, and added chocolate. The milk provides a decent 9 grams of protein while the whipped cream adds extra fat (in total, you’re looking at 17 grams).
While maybe not an everyday drink, it’s perfect for a special occasion or those days when you need a little yum in your day. Plus, making it at home means we can tweak things to our taste and dietary needs—like adjusting the sweetness or even swapping in some alternatives like almond milk or a sugar-free syrup to lighten it up a bit.
