Hot town, it’s summer in the city—“dirty and gritty” doesn’t even begin to cover it. Is it just me, or are you feeling half-dead n’ hotter than a match head too? Seriously, though. Unless there’s a pool or body of water nearby, the idea of roasting in the sun seems like pure torture. Forget the great outdoors—come July, AC and an endless supply of iced drinks are non-negotiable.

If you, like me, tend to wilt when the temps rise above 95ºF, iced coffees and refreshers are the only way to survive. While I was on kind of a strawberry kick for the last couple of weeks—strawberry acai refreshers, pink drinks, and iced strawberry lattes have been my favorite summer accessories lately—I decided to branch out to fresh new fruity flavors.

My DIY Starbucks dragonfruit refresher recipe is just the latest addition to my coffee-free lineup. Featuring sweet mango nectar, puckery-tart citric acid, freeze-dried dragonfruit powder, and plenty of ice, it’s the frosty, liquid embodiment of sunshine.

Best of all, this copycat mango dragonfruit refresher recipe is made with only a handful of ingredients and requires minimal prep time so you can get back to actively chilling ASAP. Enjoy!

What are mango dragonfruit Starbucks refreshers?

This brilliantly bright cup of joy is one of Starbucks’ finest inventions yet. Imagine a vibrant blend of tropical mango and mildly sweet dragonfruit, all shaken up with ice and a splash of citrusy lemonade or plain water—the perfect pick-me-up when the heat has you feeling more sluggish than a sloth on a Sunday. It's like a mini tropical vacation in a cup, complete with a gorgeous pink hue that screams 'photo op'!

    What does it taste like?

Upon first sip, you’ll taste a rush of mango nectar—bright, juicy, and dripping with honeyed sweetness. As the cool, refreshing liquid revives your senses, the mild kiwi-melon vibe of dragonfruit whispers across your tongue.

As the tropical twosome swirls about, a zesty tang of citric acid smacks you with an invigorating sharpness that wakes up all the flavors, making them pop and sparkle like sunlight on ocean waves. If you go the extra mile and make your mango dragon fruit refresher with lemonade, you’ll get an extra puckery punch.

In short, each gulp of this thirst-quenching ambrosia will lift your mood, adding a splash of lively color and a burst of freshness to any sweltering summer afternoon.

Why You’ll Love This Mango Dragonfruit Refresher Recipe

    • Spectacularly Simple - Despite dripping with vibrant, fruity flavors, this Starbucks copycat recipe is made with just 6 ingredients total.
    • Beautiful & Budget-Friendly - Rather than spending upwards of $5 on a single serving (before tax and tip!), you can spend less to make a week’s worth of this pretty pink pitaya drink!
    • Coffee & Caffeine-Free - As much as I love cold brew drinks on muggy mornings, by the time the sun is directly overhead, I want something lighter, brighter, and devoid of the dehydrating effects of caffeine. This tart n’ tangy mango dragonfruit lemonade refresher is perfectly crave-worthy even when the heat is brutal.

    Ingredients Needed

    • Water & Ice - If possible, start with filtered water for the best, cleanest taste.
    • Mango Nectar - This pre-sweetened fruit nectar is thicker and more viscous than mango juice. Most grocery stores should carry it near the shelf-stable juices, but you can also purchase it online.
    • Granulated Sugar - Plain white sugar has a neutral sweetness that allows the fruity flavors to shine.
    • Dragonfruit Powder & Freeze-Dried Dragonfruit Pieces - Starbucks adds chunks of dragonfruit to these refreshers in addition to flavoring the mango dragonfruit base with it. If you don’t want to purchase both, you’re welcome to blitz the freeze-dried fruit pieces in a food processor until they form a fine powder.
    • Citric Acid - This white powder is a highly concentrated form of a naturally occurring substance that makes citrus fruits taste tart. If you’re a fan of the puckery powder on the outside of Sour Patch Kids, you’re already familiar with it. 😉
    • Lemonade - This is optional, though it does add an extra layer of brightness. Feel free to swap in more water for a lower-calorie, lower-sugar alternative.

    Substitutions

    • Water & Mango Nectar - I haven’t tried it, but I bet you could get away with swapping white grape juice for the water and mango juice for the nectar to make a slightly thinner mango dragonfruit refresher base.
    • Granulated Sugar - Feel free to swap in your favorite cup-for-cup sweetener like monkfruit or stevia to cut back on calories.
    • Dragonfruit Powder & Freeze-Dried Dragonfruit Pieces - Dragon fruit tastes like a cross between kiwi, watermelon, and pear, so feel free to mix and match these freeze-dried fruits to your heart’s content. You’re also welcome to trade in other freeze-dried tropical fruit like pineapple or papaya for a different take.
    • Citric Acid - You can replace each ¼ teaspoon of citric acid with 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice.
    • Lemonade - As I mentioned above, water is an acceptable substitute. You can also trade in limeade for a fun twist.
    • Ice - Add some extra flair to your drink by making your ice with edible flowers.

How To Make A Mango Dragonfruit Refresher At Home

This delightful drink is a snap to make. Here’s how it’s done:

Step 1: Heat. Add the water, mango nectar, sugar, dragonfruit powder, and citric acid to a medium saucepan and heat over low heat.

Step 2: Mix & Cool. Whisk continuously until the dragonfruit powder and citric acid are dissolved, then remove from heat. Allow the mixture to cool, then transfer to a large jar with a lid. You’ll have enough base to make 4 drinks.

Step 3: Pour ½ cup Mango Dragonfruit refresher base over ice in a tall glass.

Step 4: Top with water or lemonade.

Step 5: Garnish. Add freeze-dried dragonfruit (this will make the drink purple).

Step 6: Stir & drink up!

a clear glass straw was added to the garnished homemade refresher and stirred to incorporate more of the fuschia pitaya color down into the mango dragonfruit base.

    Optional Variations & Dietary Adjustments

As much as I love this dragonfruit mango refresher recipe as written, there are plenty of ways for you to tweak it to your liking. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

    • Caffeinated - If you want to add a little extra pep in your step, feel free to include green tea extract or green coffee extract a la Starbucks.
    • Sparkling - Swap out the water or lemonade for mineral water, citrusy seltzer, or sparkling lemonade.
    • Reduced-Sugar - Replace the white sugar with your favorite cup-for-cup sugar replacer and opt for water instead of making your mango dragonfruit refresher with lemonade. NOTE: Since mango nectar is sweetened, this will reduce but not eliminate added sugars in your drink.
    • Creamy - Make your mango dragonfruit refresher with coconut milk instead of lemonade or water for a delightfully rich and creamy alternative.

    Serving Suggestions

    • The Classic Way: Serve it straight up over a mountain of crushed ice. It’s the quickest route to cool-down city and the perfect way to enjoy the pure, unadulterated flavors of mango and dragonfruit. Add a fun straw and a little umbrella for that ultimate vacation vibe.
    • Frozen Delight: Pour the assembled refresher mixture into popsicle molds for a frozen treat that’ll have both kids and adults coming back for more. It’s a fun, lickable version of your favorite drink!
    • Fruity Floats: Add a scoop of lime or lemon sorbet directly into the refresher for a tangy, icy twist that turns your drink into a refreshing float. It’s a delightful way to cool down and sweeten up your afternoon.
    • Boozy Bliss: Hosting a summer soirée? Transform your refresher into a delightful cocktail by adding a shot of white rum or vodka. It’s a grown-up twist that turns your refresher into the star of any al fresco party.
    • Tropical Sangria: Here’s another adults-only twist—swap the lemonade for a generous pour of white wine or champagne, then garnish with sliced limes, oranges, and a handful of berries for a sensational summer sangria.

    Recipe Success Tips

    • Plan Ahead. You’ll want to leave plenty of time for the mango dragonfruit refreshers base to cool so it doesn’t get too diluted. Want to speed up the process? Set your saucepan in an ice water bath and stir every few minutes. It should be ready for slurping in about 15 minutes!
    • Scale As Needed - My recipe makes enough base for 4 grande mango dragonfruit refreshers, but you can easily double, triple, or multiply by as many times as you’d like. It’ll keep well in the fridge for a week, or you can freeze the base for up to 3 months.
    • Use PLENTY Of Ice! When it’s punishingly hot, there’s nothing like a super icy drink to cool you down. As a bonus, when the refresher is gone, you’ll still have lightly flavored very cold water to sip on as the ice melts.

    FAQs

Is Starbucks’ mango dragonfruit refresher healthy?

That kinda depends on what your definition of healthy is, but I’d say it can certainly fit into a healthy diet. Jump below for full nutritional stats.

Is the mango dragonfruit refresher gluten-free? Is it vegan? What about kosher?

Yes, yes (if you use vegan-friendly sugar), and it depends.

Most drinks from Starbucks stores are not considered kosher for a variety of reasons, including:

    1. The use of non-kosher certified grape juice in refreshers,
    2. The use of shared sinks (that may come in contact with meat/dairy items) and overall cleaning methods for equipment, storage containers, and utensils, and
    3. Non-kosher knives being used for cutting limes and lemons.

If you make your own refreshers at home in a kosher kitchen, however, you should be able to overcome these issues. Yet another reason to be your own barista!

Do Starbucks mango dragonfruit refreshers have caffeine?

Yes, if you purchase them in stores, all Starbucks refreshers have some caffeine thanks to green coffee extract being added to the refresher bases. My homemade version omits the addition of caffeine, but you’re welcome to add it if you like!
