What does it taste like?
This Berry Lemonade Refresher tastes like a lemon-kissed berry bramble. Lemonade lays down a bright, tangy foundation—freshly squeezed and sweetened just enough to make each sip sparkle. Then comes the magic: a vibrant summer berry base swirled in with notes of juicy white grape, jammy raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries.
It’s deeply fruity, slightly tart, with an amazing azure hue thanks to a touch of nutrient-packed blue spirulina. To top it off? Raspberry popping boba that burst with a sweet-tart zing, adding a playful, juicy surprise with every sip. It's refreshing, invigorating, and just the right balance of sweet and tangy—like drinking a cool breeze on a hot day.

Why You’ll Love This Starbucks Refresher Recipe
- One & Done - Make the refresher base once, then enjoy the sweet-tart berry goodness all week long. Each batch makes enough for 6 drinks!
- All-Natural - The Summer Berry Lemonade Refresher you’d get at Starbucks has a scary-sounding ingredient list including maltodextrin, malic acid, and rebaudioside-A. I don’t know about you, but I prefer my recipes to not require a chemistry degree! This DIY refresher recipe cuts back on the artificial stuff with a list of just 9 simple ingredients—all of which are readily identifiable and easy to pronounce.
- Economical - When a Starbucks order is $5 at minimum, often before tax or tip, it’s hard to justify indulging very often. Luckily, when you make your own Starbucks refreshers at home, you’ll pay just pennies on the dollar! (Seriously, I can make a week’s worth of summer berry lemonade goodness for the cost of just one in stores.)
Ingredients Needed
- Water & White Grape Juice - Starting with a mix of water and almost-neutral grape juice ensures a juicy-sweet taste without the need for too much added sugar.
- Granulated Sugar - White sugar has no discernible taste other than “sweet,” meaning the full force of fruity flavors will be on display in every sip.
- Citric Acid - This common canning ingredient adds a concentrated dose of puckery tartness.
- Raspberry Extract, Blueberry Extract & Blackberry Extract - These berry flavored extracts are derived from the fruits themselves, bringing big berry flavor (and a nice hit of antioxidant goodness) to your cup.
- Blue Spirulina - No artificial dyes here! This powdered algae adds vibrant color and a dose of vital nutrients.
- Lemonade - I like to make my own lemonade with just water, sugar, and lemon juice to keep things all-natural, but you’re welcome to use store-bought for convenience.
- Raspberry Popping Boba - You know Gushers fruit snacks—chewy on the outside and gooey in the center? These tapioca balls are like miniature, more natural versions of that.

Substitutions
- White Grape Juice - Apple juice has a slightly stronger flavor, but can be used in a pinch. Alternatively, use 100% berry juice of any variety.
- Granulated Sugar - Use cane sugar for a less-refined option. Superfine or caster sugar are also perfect 1:1 substitutes.
- Citric Acid - A teaspoon of citric acid is roughly as tart as ¼ cup of lemon juice, so you’ll need approximately 6 tablespoons of juice for this swap.
- Blue Spirulina - Feel free to swap in butterfly pea powder, another popular natural blue pigment. Just note that the acidity from the lemonade will turn it from blue to more of a magenta-purple color.
- Lemonade - Switch things up with limeade, or add a bit of effervescence with sparkling lemonade.
- Raspberry Popping Boba - Make your own regular (non-popping) raspberry boba or use regular boba pearls.

How To Make Starbucks Summer Berry Lemonade Refresher
Step 1: Simmer. Add all the Summer Berry Refresher base ingredients to a small saucepan and bring to a simmer, whisking until the sugar and blue spirulina dissolve.
Step 2: Cool the base by pouring it into a mason jar and storing in the fridge.
Step 3: Add ½ cup of the refresher base and ½ cup of lemonade to a cocktail shaker with ice.
Step 4: Shake the cocktail shaker vigorously for 45 seconds.Step 5: Assemble. Add the raspberry popping boba to a serving glass with ice. Strain the shaken Summer Berry Lemonade Refresher into the glass, then serve with a boba straw!

Optional Variations & Dietary Adjustments
- Reduced-Sugar - Rather than using lemonade, try using water (or seltzer!) like in a regular summer berry refresher. Alternatively, swap in diet lemonade.
- Sugar-Free - Use your favorite cup-for-cup sugar replacement (e.g. monkfruit) to make the refresher base and the lemonade. Rather than using raspberry boba, soak 1 tablespoon of chia seeds in ¼ cup of hot water for about 30 minutes. You’ll get a similar textural experience as regular boba, but with less sugar and more nutrients like protein and fiber.
- Caffeinated - Wanna make your lemonade refresher like Starbucks? Consider adding a bit of green tea extract or green coffee extract for a little bit of buzz.
- Creamy - Make a dreamy Summer Skies drink by trading out the lemonade in favor of coconut milk.
Serving Suggestions
This summer berry lemonade refresher adds some seriously laid-back vibes to your day, no matter how you serve it. Here are just a few ideas of ways to boost that vacation state of mind:
- Pool Party Perfection - This beautiful blue beverage looks right at home with floaties and pool noodles. Turn your backyard into a Starbucks oasis by serving it in a pitcher with lemon slices and fresh berries. Don’t want your drinks to get diluted? Freeze a serving or two of shaken lemonade refresher into fruity ice cubes.
- Serve-Yourself - Set up a DIY refresher station with a pitcher each of summer berry refresher base, lemonade, coconut milk, bowls of boba, fresh fruit, citrus slices, and still or sparkling water so guests can customize their own drinks.
- Adults-Only Fun - Give your refresher a grown-up glow-up with a splash of booze. Vodka or citrusy gin both work well for cocktails, while dry sparkling rose gives wine cooler vibes.
- Citrusy Affogato - Turn the Italian espresso and vanilla ice cream dessert on its head by swapping in summer berry lemonade and a scoop of lemon or berry sorbet.

Recipe Success Tips
- Chill Out - Make sure you give the refresher base ample time to cool before assembling your first drink. You don’t want the ice to melt during the shaking step!
- Really Shake It - You know how hipster bartenders seem to make a real show of shaking cocktails? It’s not just fun to watch—that action actually changes the texture of the drink by breaking off shards of ice that aerate it. Make sure to shake hard for 30-45 seconds for the best results.
- Scale As Needed - I love that one batch of the berry refresher base makes enough for 6 drinks, which is plenty for my normal consumption. That said, if you’re hosting a shindig, you’ll want to make sure to have plenty on hand! Feel free to double or triple the recipe as needed.
FAQs
While there are no gluten-containing ingredients in the summer berry refresher with lemonade, Starbucks uses shared equipment—this means their drinks aren’t suitable for celiacs. But, now that you know how to make it at home, you can mix one up without any fear!
At the time of publication, grande lemonade refreshers run in the ballpark of $6-7 depending on where you live. While the individual components for making your own DIY version will likely total more than that, you’ll also have enough ingredients on hand to keep you in berry bliss nearly all summer long! I personally spend about $1/serving to make my own.
So long as it’s not their only source of hydration, sure! I think of it along the lines of letting them have an occasional root beer. I feel particularly okay about sharing my homemade summer berry lemonade refreshers with the kids because my version isn’t caffeinated—it’s just a fun sweet treat. Note that this won’t be true for all kids (e.g. diabetics), so use your best judgment or speak to your pediatrician for further guidance.
Each serving of this Summer Berry Lemonade Refresher contains 193 calories and 47 grams of carbohydrates, 44 of which come from sugar—it’s definitely a sweet treat. There’s also 0 grams of fat, 0 grams of protein, and just 19 milligrams of sodium—not surprising for a juice-based drink.
The calories come from both natural and added sugar, and are similar to what you’d find in a regular lemonade or fruity sweet tea. And while more of a treat than a hydration staple, it’s a refreshing alternative to soda that’s made with ingredients you can actually pronounce. Plus, the berry extracts and real lemon juice provide some antioxidants and vitamin C.
Want to lighten it up? Check out the optional variations section above for ideas. If you serve it as is, I recommend enjoying it in moderation and pairing it with a snack or meal that contains protein, fiber, and healthy fat to help keep your blood sugar steady.
At the end of the day, it’s all about balance. This refresher is a fun, fruity way to celebrate summer—and sometimes, that’s exactly what the moment calls for.

This doesn't taste exactly like the real thing...its better. The ONLY bad thing about it is that I couldn't find the blue spirulina anywhere so It looked a bit redish but it really doesn't matter that much. Thank you for this and I think it deserves 5 stars.
