    Ingredients Needed

Making your own Starbucks-style shaken espresso requires just a few simple ingredients. Here’s what to grab:

ingredients needed to make a starbucks copycat hazelnut oatmilk shaken espresso measured out on a white table.
    • Espresso - You can’t have a shaken espresso without espresso! Make sure it’s freshly brewed with high-quality beans for the best results.
    • Hazelnut Syrup - My 3-ingredient homemade version tastes just as good as the store-bought kind at a fraction of the price.
    • Ice - If possible, use ice made from filtered water for the best flavor.
    • Oat Milk - I used Oatly Full Fat, which was super yummy. If you can’t find that blend, any full-fat barista-style blend should work.

    Substitutions

If you ran out of something or need to make a swap, I want you to feel empowered! Here are some easy substitutions to try:

    • Espresso - Feel free to start with 5 ounces of cold brew (made with coarsely ground espresso beans) instead.
    • Hazelnut Syrup - You’re welcome to use any flavor of coffee syrup you prefer, or even storebought hazelnut syrup.
    • Ice - Try using coffee ice to keep the high-octane energizing power right to the last sip.
    • Oat Milk - Any plant-based or dairy milk can also be used. You’re the barista, so make it how you like!

How To Make Iced Hazelnut Shaken Oat Milk Espresso

If you’ve ever wondered how to make Starbucks shaken espresso, the answer is: it's simple!. Here’s how it’s done:

Step 1: Ice Espresso. Add ice to a mason jar. Pour the espresso over the ice.

Step 2: Add Hazelnut Syrup to the jar.

Step 3: Shake. Seal the jar with the lid and shake a few times. The more you shake, the more diluted the espresso will become.

Step 4: Pour the iced coffee (ice and all) into a tall glass.

Step 5: Top with oat milk and stir if desired. Drink up!

    Optional Variations & Dietary Adjustments

As it turns out, customizing your homemade Starbucks coffee drinks is actually easier than ordering a custom drink in-store. Here are some easy tweaks to make this recipe your own:

    • Different Syrup: Change the flavor profile by experimenting with different syrups. Cinnamon dolce syrup can add a touch of autumnal warmth, while vanilla can bring a classic, comforting sweetness. Mocha sauce makes this a chocolate hazelnut iced coffee. For those who love adventure in their cup, caramel or even apple brown sugar syrup can offer a delightful twist. Or, try another Starbucks favorite and make an iced brown sugar oatmilk shaken espresso.
    • Different Milk: Oat milk provides a creamy, slightly sweet base, but don’t hesitate to swap it out for your favorite milk. Almond milk will lend a nuttier undertone with a thinner mouthfeel, while soy or coconut milk can offer a unique flavor and texture. For those who prefer dairy, whole milk will make the drink even creamier and richer.
    • Decaf: Love the taste but not the buzz? Substitute the espresso with a decaf shot. You'll still enjoy the rich coffee flavor without the caffeine kick, making it a perfect evening treat.
    • Spiked: Transform your shaken espresso into a delightful adult beverage by adding a splash of your favorite liquor. A shot of Baileys, Kahlúa, or even Frangelico (hazelnut liqueur) turns this coffee treat into a sophisticated cocktail perfect for a relaxing brunch or a night carousing by the fire.

    Serving Suggestions

Whether it's a quiet moment alone or a joyful gathering with friends, your Iced Hazelnut Oatmilk Shaken Espresso is sure to be the star of the occasion. Here are a few ways to enjoy it to the fullest:

    • Perfect Pairings: Make your coffee break extra special by pairing this shaken espresso with a snack. It goes wonderfully with a slice of banana bread, a warm croissant, or even a plate of fresh fruit. For a heartier option, consider avocado toast or a turkey bacon breakfast sandwich.
    • Make it a Meal: Planning a brunch? This shaken espresso is the ideal accompaniment. Serve it alongside classic brunch dishes like huevos rancheros, chocolate chip waffles, or a savory breakfast bake. Fancy coffee adds a sophisticated restaurant touch to any homemade meal!
    • Afternoon Delight: Turn your afternoon break into a mini-retreat. Enjoy your shaken espresso with an oatmeal protein cookie or a sumptuous oat flour chocolate chip cookie. You've earned it!
    • Seasonal Touches: Depending on the season, pair with flavors that are complementary to hazelnut. In warmer months, serve it with an Italian lemon cake or berry tart. In chilly weather, pair it with a warm apple crisp or healthy chocolate hazelnut balls for a cozy treat.

    Recipe Success Tips

Here are some expert tips that will elevate your coffee-making game:

    • Quality Ingredients Matter: Start with high-quality espresso beans for the best flavor. Freshly ground beans just before brewing can make a significant difference in taste. Also, opt for a good quality (preferably homemade) hazelnut syrup to ensure a rich, authentic coffee shop flavor.
    • Avoid Temperature Tantrums: To prevent the espresso from becoming too diluted, use ice that is not too small. Larger cubes melt slower, maintaining the strength of the espresso while still providing a refreshing chill.
    • Balance is Key: Finding the right balance between espresso, syrup, and oat milk can take a few tries. Start with the recipe's suggested ratios, then adjust according to your taste preference.
    • Presentation is Key: Serve in a clear glass to showcase the beautiful layers of the drink. Garnish thoughtfully with a sprinkle of cocoa powder or a few coffee beans for an Instagrammable finish.

    FAQs

What’s the difference between this and an iced hazelnut latte?

The primary difference between an Iced Hazelnut Oatmilk Shaken Espresso and an Iced Hazelnut Latte lies in both the preparation method and the default milk choice. In our shaken espresso recipe, the freshly brewed espresso is vigorously shaken with homemade hazelnut syrup and ice.

On the other hand, in a traditional Iced Hazelnut Latte, the ingredients are simply layered rather than shaken. Espresso is poured over ice and then topped with milk, and hazelnut syrup is added as a sweetener. And, if you order one at Starbucks without any qualifiers, a hazelnut latte is typically made with whole milk rather than oat milk.

Do I need a cocktail shaker to make it?

Nope! I generally just use a mason jar with a tight-fitting lid, which works like a dream.

    Can I make it hot?

I don't recommend you ever shake a hot drink, as the steam can build up in the container and cause the lid to pop off or the container to explode, neither of which is desirable. If you want to serve it hot, just make a hot hazelnut oatmilk latte!

Homemade Iced Hazelnut Oat Milk Shaken Espresso Nutrition

Each serving of this delicious drink comes in at around 211 calories. While I'd definitely consider that a treat, it's certainly not going to derail your whole day. There's a total of 7 grams of fat in the mix, but that's what gives it the creamy texture and satisfying body. Protein-wise, we're looking at just 2 grams per serving.

Sodium is often a sneaky ingredient in many foods and drinks, but here, it's kept to a reasonable 84 milligrams. The carbohydrates sit a bit high at 34 grams. Most of that comes from the natural sugars in the oat milk and the added sweetness from the hazelnut syrup, totaling 27 grams of sugar.

Remember, the joy of playing barista is that you have the control to tweak the recipe – reduce the syrup a little if you’re watching your sugar intake, or adjust the type of milk to fit your nutritional needs. It's all about making it your own and enjoying every sip!

I was not impressed with Starbucks and this drink. I was excited when you posted your take on it. Yours is so much better! Thank you! Still not one of my favorites, I’m not sure why. But thank you for coming up with this. It is very good and much better than theirs! I’ve already made it several times! My hubby likes it and he’s not an iced coffee person!

In my opinion, plain hazelnut flavor in coffee just isn't that good. BUT, if you add 1 or 2 tablespoons of mocha sauce, it's suddenly chocolate hazelnut flavor and it's delicious. It's my favorite way to make this drink!
